I like the art style of anime but I hate that it's a medium filled with weak and watered-down contents that pander to specific audiences and what they want instead of truly putting effort into creating a good story. When someone makes an anime that doesn't add unnecessary fluff as a crutch stealing the limelight from the actual story, come get me.
A good example of this is Baccano, which could have been great without trying to be Fullmetal Alchemist, but instead brought supernatural elements into the mix just for shits 'n giggles. The end product, much like Fullmetal Alchemist, simply lost its sense of place in its own world. Compare that to Spice and Wolf, an anime about economics which was still just as much about economics by the end and developed its bullshit romance on the sidelines, even then maintaining it for the sole purpose of making the main character less of a heartless douche and the supporting character less of a patronizing bitch.
Okay, that's one anime I've found tolerable all the way through. But everything else I try to watch I simply can't get through on account of the seemingly inevitable cringe that ensues. Granted, I grew up in the presence of half-written books and poems so my standards of literary composition are quite high, but animation and pretty visuals are no excuse for shitty content.
